NBS Group Projects Nominated for BDA Brick Award

Added on: 27th November 2006

The NBS Group have yet again supplied materials for nominated projects at the BDA Brick Awards this year.

The Brick Development Association Awards are taking place on the 8th November and the NBS Group have high hopes after a project using our GIMA Clay Modular Blocks was announced the winner in the Innovative Use of Brick and Clay category at the 2005 awards.

This years nominees are:

Project: Dickens Heath New Town

Bricks Used: Thames Yellow, Breckland Multi, Dales Blend & Wharfe Blend

A New Town development incorporating a variety of shops, café bars and other businesses to cater for the expansion of the residential area of Dickens Heath.

The scheme was designed by a number of Architectural practices led by Stephen George & Partners of Leicester, for their Clients, Parkridge Homes.  John Sisk have thus far been main contractor for the first 2 phases and likely to be awarded phase 3.

Phase 1 is now complete and very much gives a ‘Colonial Style’ environment, particularly with the Town Hall & Library, Health Centre and Nursery School.

2 bat towers stand tall in this phase (Planning stipulation) – at the one end of the development which goes on to a very relaxing looking, well designed street scene.

Businesses take care of the ground floor premises with residential properties above.

All brick products selected were from Hanson’s Stairfoot factory – 3 tumbled products, Thames Yellow, Breckland Multi and Dales Blend – with the 4th being Wharfe Blend.  (All products are pre-blended at the factory which shows in the final quality of build) The project received monitored contract assistance but was completed with absolutely no supply, quality or other problems.

At the southern end of the development, the canal has been diverted underneath more residential apartments.

Project: West Quay

Bricks Used: Richmond Orange

Robothams Architecture were commissioned by Laing Homes (Midlands) Limited to design two blocks of residential apartments on West Quay, Gloucester Docks in 2002.

The design concept was to create two five-storey blocks in the massing from of a previous warehouse building which has historically occupied this site.

They were to be predominately constructed in brickwork with a traditional roof

over. However, rather than a vernacular approach, the Architects, in conjunction with Gloucester Planners/Conservation Team, have created contemporary facades including large glazed stair tower, balconies, metal windows and brise soleil.  The upper floor is set back from the main façade in order to create balconies to the penthouse units but also to give the buildings a lightweight upper floor which is clad in cedar boarding.

The overall effect of the buildings is to fill in the open side of West Quay allowing views across the River Severn to the west and the main docks to the east.
